Homemade Taco Seasoning Mix

Homemade taco seasoning

I quit buying seasoning mixes, packets, etc. a long time ago. They usually have objectionable ingredients, there's too much wasteful packaging and they are expensive. I maintain a well-stocked spice cabinet so it's no trouble to make my own seasonings.

Recently I tried a new recipe which called for taco seasoning. Now, generally if I'm making tacos or other Mexican dishes, I just season with some chili powder, cumin, garlic, etc. I don't measure but just sprinkle on the food to taste. But since this was a new-to-me recipe I decided that at least for the first time I should *try* to follow the instructions.

So I did a quick search for homemade taco seasoning and found this one on allrecipes.com. It has over 2000 reviews and a 5-star rating. I figured that was good enough for me. I'll list the ingredients here but you should go to the site for quantities. You can plug in how many servings you want to make and it adjusts the quantities for each ingredient. I don't recall how many servings I made but the jar pictured above holds 14 oz. and it's about 3/4 full. I figured while I had all those spices out of the cupboard I might as well make a good-sized batch. Now whenever I make a Mexican dish I just sprinkle some of this in it instead of pulling out several jars.
